Why does my GFCI outlet keep tripping?

What the GFCI is doing

Ground-fault circuit interrupters monitor the current leaving and returning on a circuit. When the device detects an imbalance that may represent leakage, it opens the circuit quickly. That protective action is different from a standard breaker responding to overload or short-circuit current.

Common reasons for repeated trips

Moisture or damp equipment

Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, garages and outdoor locations are more likely to involve water or condensation. A damp appliance, weather-exposed box or wet extension connection can cause the GFCI to trip.

A faulty appliance

A coffee maker, refrigerator, sump pump, washing machine, power tool or other connected appliance may have leakage that only appears while operating. Unplugging portable equipment can help separate an appliance problem from a circuit problem, but repeatedly resetting the GFCI is not a repair.

A downstream wiring problem

One GFCI device may protect additional ordinary-looking outlets. Damage, moisture or an incorrect connection anywhere on that protected portion can prevent the GFCI from staying reset.

A worn or damaged GFCI

Devices can fail with age, heavy use, physical damage or previous electrical events. Replacement may be appropriate, but the circuit should be evaluated when a new or existing device continues to trip.

What you can check safely

1. Unplug portable equipment from the affected outlets.
2. Make sure the area and your hands are dry.
3. Press RESET once according to the device instructions.
4. If it trips again, leave it off and schedule troubleshooting.

Do not bypass the GFCI, replace it with an unprotected outlet or continue resetting a device that shows heat, damage or discoloration.
