Planning a Level 2 charger at home

A good charger installation starts with the electrical system. The charger model matters, but so do panel capacity, the circuit route, placement and the vehicle’s charging limits.

What an electrician evaluates

Available electrical capacity

A load calculation helps determine whether the existing service can support the charging load. A panel upgrade is not automatically required; the actual result guides the options.

Charger and circuit requirements

Charging equipment has specific voltage, current, conductor, breaker and connection requirements. Continuous-load rules also affect circuit sizing.

Location and cable reach

The mounting location should work for everyday parking, protect the cable and support a practical wiring route. Outdoor installations need equipment and methods suitable for the environment.

Hardwired or receptacle?

Either may be appropriate depending on the charger, desired output and location. Hardwired installations can reduce connection points, while receptacle-based charging may offer equipment flexibility. The manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements govern the final choice.
